This Year's Tree. . . .

. . .did not come out of storage under our stairs, was not pre-strung with a zillion lights, and did not leave our carpet needle free. BUT ~ this tree is one of the most beautiful fresh cut trees we've ever had, was the first one we saw at the tree farm and smells so incredibly good it's got me giddy. I'm not kidding. . . I didn't want to put a single thing on it because it is so beautiful! By nightfall the lights were strung, the star topper was in place and a simple sampling of decorations were hung. It almost feels like costume jewelery for a queen.

Heart-felt Journey

Casey, Lindsey, Ariele, Madison, Taylor
Where's Shelby?

In September, the Girls and I met up with their cousins at the White River Amphitheater to see the Heart and Journey concert. Imagine a woman, who saw both these bands perform when they first began touring 30 years ago, listening to her teenage daughters sing the words to their songs with her. So cool! What pleased me almost as much as being at our first concert together was watching the girls be embraced by their two 20-something cousins as peers. Doesn't seem that long along there was a big age gap between them. Good memories were made!

SEE YA IN THE FUNNIES, DAD

James L. Castonguay
December 15, 1923 - October 5, 2008
Forever missed~ Forever loved.

I have procrastinated posting about the recent passing of my Dad because I have been trying to find just the right words. .. that's the pesty perfectionist side of me. I haven't wanted to post anything else in the meantime because I feel saying something in honor of him deserves priority posting. Today, Jewelya, Jim's first granddaughter sent me her notes from the eulogy she gave at his service. Perfect! Thank you so much!

Here is some of what she said:

Today is a day for celebration to come together with love & honor for our loved one’s journey home. Change is never easy when we are attached to the ever changing physical form. Relationships never end, they only change level.

In his 85 years, nearly a century, James Castonguay graced us with his whitty charater that will remain a part of us long after he is gone. Also known as Jim, Dad, Grampa, & Grampa "GG", he was the youngest child and outlived all of his 14 siblings.

Born in Mill Town, Montana, of French born parents, he took after his father, working in the mill in Montana before joining the Army. He crossed the English Channel on his 21st birthday, served in WWII, was part of the second wave of American soldiers that hit the beach at Normandy and was a decorated solider and Purple Heart recipient. After returning from the war, he married and had his first child, Sue. He moved his family to Renton, WA in 1957 to pursue a better life.

He later married Lois, who commends his partnership of 40 years, dedication as a husband and his willingness to step in and become a special father to help raise six children, along with their youngest child together, Lee.

A carpenter by trade, he retired in 1989. Not only will his character and handy work live on with us, so will many of the buildings that he helped build. These include the Columbia Tower, the Metropolitan Buildings, Microsoft's first campus buildings, Cascade Vistas, and the house he built in Renton, to name a few.

He loved to dance and socialize, tease and joke, travel and explore. One of his loves was to give kisses. He loved to ride his Harley in his younger days, probably sporting his favorite color blue and grabbing the end of his nose between his index finger and thumb, which became his identifying gesture.

We can all visualize our own stories and memories that stick out to us. It is at times like this that we are called to look a little deeper into what limits us, stretch a little further beyond our boundaries, love more unconditionally and appreciate the beauty of living fully in the moment of now.

Having a long history of being a survivor, his strength and determination assisted his ability to wrestle with the aftermath of his stroke two years ago. Even to the very last days when his ability to speak was lost, he maintained his sense of humor and communication, most likely to help us all through this tough time.

Jim will remain in the hearts of his wife, Lois, his 8 children, 13 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, many friends and extended family members that have crossed paths with him through the years.

One of his favorite sayings when we would say goodbyes was "See ya in the Funnies!" It would crack him up, which of course would make us laugh too. We are so glad you made the choice to love our Mother and all her chicks! We love you and will miss you always.

Who Wants Popcorn?

Last month we spent a weekend at Desert Aire, we rented the above flicks and watched them ALL in two nights. . .this is like eating chocolate to me! DELICIOUS!

  • Bucket List : Funny and sad. . .awesome acting. I want my own bucket list!
  • Transformers : We've seen this before, but the girls love it, moral to the story: good over evil with special effects thrown in.
  • 21 : Watch the good turn bad and then. . .sorry, what happens in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas.
  • No Reservations : I think Catherine wanted to make a movie her kids could watch.
  • Legends : I could not keep from screaming. . .you know, those screams you hear and don't even realize they're coming out of your own mouth.
  • PS. I Love You : I'm a romantic at heart, so of course it made me cry.

Just The Right Light. . .

Taylor worked this summer to be able to purchase a camera she wanted. She loves to experiment with it. . .I think she captured just the right light on this one! Ally was exploring the sea life at Anderson Island's marine park during our Labor Day weekend camping trip. This year was especially fun for us. . .a gaggle of the girls' friends joined us!

Taylor Made. . .

Recently Taylor wanted to wallpaper one of the walls in her bedroom with pages of magazines containing things she likes. One of her friends did this and she loved the idea. She was so happy on how it turned out. Unfortunately, the tape we had didn't hold so well on a textured surface. The next morning she woke up to a blanket of magazine pages on her floor. . .rippppppppppp.

"Barbarian" Village

We hid away for a couple of days with the girls in the quaint town of Leavenworth, nestled in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. Very German. . .very Bavarian. . .pulling into town, Madison asked "What's a Barbarian Village?"

We enjoyed our relaxed time by the pool, read books and magazines, watched the Olympics every night and ate the BEST scones!

The view from our unit

Our unit is the top of the middle building. So nice. . .

Shoozzz. . . .

I was looking for a particular photo in my e-files and came across this one. . which I love! While food shopping at Fred Meyer, the girls and I took Avery on a detour through the shoe department. Can you just see "shooz" on her lips as we browsed up and down the aisles. What a field trip!

Glorious

Those rain clouds hung with us for hours on our drive to Eastern Washington last weekend. We didn't mind because we knew where we were going they wouldn't survive.

Beautiful Columbia River Valley. . .this was our view for the next two days. (Thanks Cheri and Steve) Those scared-y-cat clouds. . hardly showed their faces at all.

Return trip home via Chinook Pass and Mt. Rainier National Forest. . .this is one of my favorite drives. . .it takes your breath away when you come around that turn to see a 15,000 ft mountain waiting to show her beauty.

In Loving Memory. . . .

Betty Brashear
Mom to Cheri & Steve, Grandma to Scott, Wes & Dana
Great Grandma to Sophia, Nathan, & Carmen

This morning we received the sad news that someone we love dearly passed away yesterday. The end of June brought her 83rd birthday and we really expected she would live to celebrate 20 more. She is the smile at every celebration, the contagious giggle behind beautiful sparkling eyes. Always gorgeous with her fashion and incredible platinum hair (natural of course), her memory was the best for sharing funny and heartwarming stories. Although she is Mom to our sister-in-law, Cheri, she is part of all our families. We will miss her terribly.

Basic Little Black Dress

Tia, Melinda, Kathy, Mary

This past weekend was the national convention for SENSARIA. It's always such a positive experience for me to connect with so many incredible people. Uplifting, inspirational, and desire provoking . . .it's not really about the lotion. Although I must admit, the new product launch has a high thrill factor in the "incredible blend of science and new technology" category! Erupting news for sure!

If you haven't already heard of this site. . .give yourself a treat and stop in. My friend, Emily, shared it with us at coffee several weeks ago, mainly because she has a passion for pups and this site has great posts about Chuck and Coco. The "daily"s are fun too. Enjoy!

Latitude 40

Hi TZ !. .this post is for you. :) Thanks for letting us know you're looking forward to the updates! I'm glad you're checking in on us.

After spending 3 days in New Jersey training, yesterday we headed to New York City with Lee and Chrystle for the day. We had a so much fun! These are just a few of the things we experienced. . .
  • 93 degrees with high humidity. . .LJC had to go commando!
  • Madison Square Garden
  • Times Square
  • A rain downpour like we've never seen in Seattle! (the umbrella street vendors came out of the woodwork!)
  • Empire State Building
  • Shepard's Pie, Burgers, and Crabcakes at Joe Dempsey's Grill
  • Battery Park (view of the Statue of Liberty nestled in the humidity)
  • Ground Zero (the quietest spot in NYC)
  • Greenwich Village (the Gay Pride Parade. . .crowds and police everywhere)
  • Subway stops (we got pretty good at reading the lines map after missing our first stop and ending up in Brooklyn!)
  • Starbucks (of course!)
  • Roasted almonds, cashews, and peanuts from the street vendor. . covered in a brown sugar and vanilla glaze. . .it was definitely the sweetest smell on the streets of NY!
  • Taxis, taxis, and more taxis
This was Lee and Chrystle's first visit to New York. . . .
it was fun taking pictures of them.

Check it out > > >

Back where we started

Monday, June 9, 2008

We are amazed every May when this "gigantus" Rhody blooms. . .it's directly across from our front yard. . .our mailbox and newspaper tube are below. (That'll give you perspective!) Some of the neighbors that have lived here decades guestimate the age of the beauty to be over 50 years. We are fortunate to be able to enjoy it everytime we look outside. Thank goodness we don't have to prune it!
